Why Captain America?

“America, America, America”

We are a proud Marvel family. Richard's nursery and room has always been decked out in an Avengers theme and Royce's nursery and now toddler room is Guardians of the Galaxy themed. My husband has a wonderful collection of comics from his childhood (nothing worth millions but priceless to us). So when my dear friends Cassandra and Brittney shared a photo of Captain America pancakes that someone else made I had to give it a try. We turned on Marvel cartoons while I enjoyed exercising the creative part of my brain and taking time to create a memory for both me and my kiddos. One of Royce's fist words was "America" because he loves Captain America so it was no surprise when the pancakes were done that he just kept saying "America, America, America".

It's interesting, after all the pancake art I've done, these are the first that spurred the idea to play with their food. We don't use syrup or butter very much, they often eat them plain so a little food play was fine (let's hope it doesn't stick around for lunch and dinner!

Make This Pancake Memory

If you're looking to make this memory here's all you need. Referencing the photo to the left.

  • First Things First start heating your griddle or skillet I use very low heat to ensure a bold vibrant color, if they cook to fast you see them brown and that hides the colors

  • Mixing bowl with pour function

  • 2 squeeze bottles (I would have preferred 3 but only had two on hand)

  • Navy gel dye

  • Red gel dye

  • Krusteaz Complete Pancake Mix

  • Small star cookie cutter (or you can free hand this, I just went the easy route)

  • Sifter

  • Water

  • Pam Cooking Spray

I used about 2 1/2 cups which yielded approximately 4-5 shields. In the mixing bowl, follow the directions on the pancake mix using the sifter. Why the sifter? well it takes all the lumps out and provides easy to work with mix, I've done it without a sifter prior and it's personal preference of mine to use it. Just seems to ensure no lump, and no issues with lumps clogging the squeeze bottles, you want an easy squeeze while you're doing pancake art, a little clog could mess up your flow (in more ways than one lol). Also add additional water to mix if needed, you want it a little more thin vs fluffy pancake batter. See the photo above.

ok so now you have your batter (it sounds like a long process typing it out but it takes me just a few mins or less. Now time to prep the squeeze bottles.

Take the Red Gel and put a few drops into the squeeze bottle (see photo above), do the same in the other bottle with the Navy Gel. You'll be using more red batter than blue batter so equal parts batter isn't needed, I just filled up the red with batter about half way and the blue about 1/4 cup. Then put the lid on and your finger over the tip and shake it up. if you don't think it mixes enough remove the cap and stir with a knife. Pro tip, when you shake it, it builds pressure and spurts a little out the top I usually do it over the sink for easy clean up.

Reminder you want to leave some plain batter in the mixing bowl for the "white" parts of the shield. Looking back I wish I had a third squeeze bottle, just makes it so much easier.

The griddle should be warm enough now let's go onto "assembly"

"I can do this all day"

Above is a slideshow. The first slide is how I assembled it on the griddle. First I make a big plain pancake and cut out the stars with the cookie cutter, I made sure the big plain pancake was under cooked a bit so when it came time to cook all together it wouldn't burn.

Spray your griddle with pam or any other cooking spray you like, Place the start cut out on your griddle, use the navy gel to connect the points of the star like a circle, then fill in the circle around the star. Then do a ring of red gel around the blue, and then about an inch or less out do another red ring. Then take the plain batter and fill it in to create the white stripe. Should come out like the one above, it's not pretty on this side lol.

Then be patient, remember you're cooking on low heat so it take a couple mins to cook enough to flip. Once you start seeing a couple bubbles you're ready to flip, too many bubbles and you may burn it a little and the colors won't be as vibrant (and that's ok too, you're making an amazing breakfast for your kids, they will love it no matter what hue it is, that'w why I love pancakes, they always taste great in any shape!).

Flip it and let it cook, I tend to let it get a little brown on this flip because you're now cooking the backside and you want to ensure it's cooked through. When you take it off the griddle let it cool on a flat surface with the "front" of the pancake face up.

I always make one or two and then feel like hey "I can do this all day"! PS if you know Avengers you'd know that quote is from the first Avengers lol. Anyways, I don't think I've ever made the same pancake twice, but never say never! Maybe around the holidays I do.

Alight Y'all post the photos of making these! Enjoy!
